I’m no poet hifalutin
mere versifier callow
who does his own in foot shooting
writing rhyming verse shallow

A superficial spin drier
of phrases oddly acquired
then dressed up in pretend attire
for yet a show uninspired

“Let versifiers”, state prim poetry fellows,
“hang themselves high in the illiterate gallows!”

Life’s hilly road winds abstruse
sometimes circuitous
Of what befalls we’re obtuse
shall seem gratuitous

Perhaps fortuitously
not by divine keyboard?
Events evolve furtively
warnings often ignored

Aren’t we oddly innocent of what is untoward
as when what seemed ‘punishment’ later turns out ‘reward’?

-abstruse = incomprehensible to one of ordinary understanding or knowledge
-gratuitous = uncalled for; lacking good reason; unwarranted
-obtuse = lacking in insight or discernment
-untoward = unexpected & inappropriate or inconvenient

This we can’t be facing

Let’s just keep on racing
on lake’s melting ice

Though species are abating
let’s collude: All is cool!
and ain’t polite berating
denial’s nonplussed fool

What’s the need to be realistic
when we can just stay optimistic?

Here the expression of ‘cry uncle’ becomes ‘cry ankle’. Experienced after long days of sightseeing on foot in e.g. a major tourism city.

Our knees
both screech

Oy vey! oy vey! oy vey!
as feet ‘cry ankle’
Dawns yet another day
regrets shall rankle

But why dwell in an existence
where the major absorbing locus
is on bodily persistence?
Where’s the intellectual focus?

But until found ain’t it sadly obvious
that of such we just had not the foggiest

If it does not go
off with ding, ring or ting
or flashing lights show
then it ain’t the real thing!

If by naked eye seen
it ain’t observing
while when shown on a screen
real, worth preserving!

Smart new electronics
does ignore contradiction
does impair mnemonics
does not know of restriction

Hence cluelessly we vociferate
as high tech downsides proliferate

Car alarm going off
lights brightly flashin’
An electronic cough
in throbbing passion

Keeps us awake all night nearly
by pained wailing protraction
A system that cavalierly
advertises ‘protection’

Pounding our poor hearing
Will it not disarm?
Sure but, persevering
can’t wait to rearm

Does goods hawked with perky snappiness
by such breathless marketing fanned
bring but material happiness
wandering in Consumer Land

while Peace of Mind ever vernal
must unceasingly be yearned
Grasped fleetingly, while eternal
cannot be bought, might be earned

Then aren’t we hapless shopping sheepishly
while the true price thereof piles steepishly?

Those hectoring, obscure scenes:
don’t know a single nut or bolt
behind those crisp shiny screens
against which hopeless to revolt

Without an apology
the techno-fix is in
by latest frivolity
we cannot fix a thing

Large corporations with such ease
(we’re hapless at their mercy)
charges us hefty service fees
We’re left to smile & curtsy

Ours is not to understand how
but (whilst being scammed) acclaim ‘wow!’

Beware of ads offering ‘free’ gifts
by busty ‘babes’ with rosy cheeks
Beware too that those composing gifs
might be high-tech chattering geeks

Beware of the neighbor’s dog
as well as of all rifts
Beware of much too strong grog
and those drunks draining fifths

Best always to stay aware
that Human Life doesn’t play fair

When was the most recent time
looking in a mirror
that whistles blew, bells would chime
when viewed ourself clearer?

Would think on reflection
on close inspection
who shall find perfection
or mass affection?

So what? In Creation’s Aviary
few get to sing like a canary
Who knows? Being a bird ordinary
may still prove amply salutary:

Might we be living just fine while unsung
grabbing on to mediocrity’s rung?
