Some found driven to exert control
to pile up goods, to hold power
Others worry in more modest role
how to get wet in their shower

While our own mole a mighty mountain
other’s mountain a measly mole
Clogged many a compassion’s fountain
barely sprinkles the beggar’s bowl

Brashly we transgress for more earthly success
while seem untroubled by our growing excess

Why let days blur by in caprice
like, glimpsed through train windows, power poles?
There’s only in the moment peace
for our harried hearts & arid souls

Whether dawns again the morrow
or fades yet another day
lets relish joy amidst sorrow
Or tell me another way?

I’d maintain living in The Moment
is Humanity’s best bestowment …

Once perhaps eagles, now wobbly geese
ages passed since we looked strapping
Now spectators of silly & sleaze
in armchairs flopping, tongues flapping

In our sugar & fat fueled rut
guzzling, chomping fast food junk
outwards bulges that beach ball gut
no bounce left for cheery spunk

Not letting inequality
or climate calamity
spoil our fun & frivolity!
Busy on screens, can’t you see?

Rather ‘amusing ourselves to death’
than fighting for working democracy
we’re consuming, wheezing out of breath
in willful ignorant hypocrisy

Withers life when nears the end
fades its rosy bouquet
What was once a stirring blend
now a sagging souffle

Sensory life squall after squall
tiring & worn from the grind
while pretenses mercifully fall
fleetingly we find peace of mind

Leaving behind the mundane
saved from banality
heading into the arcane
welcome finality!

Tranquil lakes caressed by playful breeze
below the surface: Stagnation
While waves chase waives across open seas
below: Acidification

Flora, fauna, nature looted
garbage, debris & tailings piling
land, streams, lakes & seas polluted
while spindoctors spred memes beguiling

Heat waves rolling, parched by drought
groundwater depleting
This we have all brought about
and keep right on cheating …

… our children, their future gone
with nowhere left to turn
Our species now clearly done
left but to churn & yearn

Why are we so cowardly disingenuous
ain’t the challenge worthy of action strenuous?!

May:

a crackling fire roar warming our chilled hearts
thaw the icicles of self absorption

a gallant gale scatter the heavy thoughts
howling through the dank caves of our darkness

a brisk river douse our seething anger
firmly sweep it out into the deep sea

a gentle swell cradle our gnawing fears
the hot summer sun dry our soggy soul

we not suffer in self-imposed constraint
but live freely in the choice of restraint

+)
-restrain = the ability to voluntarily moderate one’s passions
-swell = the undulating wave (non-breaking) movement on the open sea

Imagine my surprise finding Joyce just standing there without doing anything:

An eerily uncommon sight
a state ghostly, ignoble
like forgetting lines in stage fright
Joyce found herself immobile:

Once flustered face paling ashen
of all direction confused
never before been her fashion
to let seconds pass unused

Aptly portrays the frozen mime
of biblical ‘Ruth-to-salt’:
“Oh my G-d, this can’t be but I’m
turned to pillar by default!”

Most bitter pill to swallow
a solid day turned hollow …

Watching my 10 year old grandson Conner’s football game I glimpsed what a physical and logistically involved (on and off the field) game American football is — and fear for what may await the youth of Empire.

1. On approaching the field in bright sunlight:

Summer sun turns AstroTurf
among sporting noise din
a gleaming silvery surf.
Staunch fans frantic for win.

Throaty roars, yells fierce
chilling whistles pierce.

2. Boys, suited up:

Kids pumped, padded.
Shoulders hefty, awed
armor added
chest thumpingly broad.

Facial visors like on biting dogs
on shiny helmets of enormity.
Tights fitted legs look like those of frogs
in somewhat comical deformity.

3. The Game:

No letting up, no relief
for running backs & guards
in explosive rushes brief
scoring rushed hard won yards.

Game choreographed tightly
with stoic players knightly.
Piling up, bit unsightly
quickly bouncing back sprightly.

4. Parental camps:

Dug in on opposite sidelines.
Their cheering, as it would seem
by most partisan of guidelines:
Never for the other team!

5. Moms:

Exhorting in voices shrill:
“Team, show’em your guts & kill!”

Shoulders bared, nostrils flared
big hair, glossy lips.
Decolletage unimpaired,
tight pants, heavy hips.

6. Dads:

Chiseled granite jaws jutting
with gaze, steely steady.
Firm comments curtly cutting:
“Bring it on, we’re ready!”

7. Game over, shipping home:

Boys in soiled gladiator dresses
whisked away soaked in wheeled fortresses.

To return another day
unleashing same cyclone.
To rejoin the sporting fray
pumping testosterone.

Let’s hope in Ellensburg or Elyria,
but I do fear in the hills of Syria.

(+)
-bring it on = to express confidence in meeting a challenge
-Ellensburg, WA or Elyria, OH = as examples of Anytown, USA
-wheeled fortress = here: (huge) SUV, van or truck

Hoping against hope: Save my poor ear
not another repetition!
For who among us do care to hear
such runaway feeble fission?

Garrulity gone meteoric
in hapless nation dysphoric
while the gushing foamy rhetoric
soars in distortions historic

Brash opinions know not stage fright
The ubiquitous sound bite
in election spectacle’s blight
accentuates all what’s trite

They’re making claims injudicious
with lack of inhibition
For their spewing words pernicious
they’re showing no contrition
