Din of metal pushing through air
nostrils flared from tail pipe spew
Tires squealing, engines roar, horns blare
as traffic mounts tempers brew

Snug in ‘my cell phone booth on wheels’
who bothers about traffic?
Electronic Heaven appeals
am perfectly seraphic!

Til someone cuts me off of course
purloined civility shorn
then I turn deep-rootedly coarse
hanging dumbly on the horn

metal = here: vehicles

Gritting, gulping air wheezing
up steep hills, thighs in pain
Gripping handle bar squeezing
stretching the squealing chain

Guts, strength & stamina explored
post-cresting: flat road our reward

From the workforce long retired
but otherwise unexpired

While in earlier years, prior
I had the fleeting notion
of hearing the Heavenly Choir
filling me with emotion:

that while toiling away in the bike shop
I would have my life’s blowout puncture
The terminal ‘end of the line’ full stop
with no transfer beyond that juncture

So for now my mind is able to inquire
although it seems increasingly to misfire

the bike shop = my, at the time, place of work

Watch him, in comfy chair, swivel:
Pontificates, pronounces
Spouts such tiresome piles of drivel
ridicules & denounces

Regurgitates like a pup
one which hungrily licks
up the breakfast just thrown up
in never changing fix

You’d think had he his wits
he would’ve called it quits!

Rooftop raindrops perkily dance away
splashing in whimsical splatter ballet.

Abates the rain, lost drops bounce.
Drops flow off, regroup to pounce.

Languid limpness of wet puddles here flouted
synergy of ‘us drops together’ undoubted:

So with abandon down spouts with resound
hurling with untamed force on to the ground.

Just about everybody including those:

With legs toothpick scrawny
or Tour de France brawny.

Celebs basking in fawning fame
or whose friends can’t recall their name.

Who are hard pressed to steer & pedal
or just won an Olympic medal.

Who are not obtuse:
So, what’s your excuse?

(*)
obtuse = not quick or alert in perception, feeling, or intellect; not sensitive or observant; dull

In Ballard bicycle tires don’t puncture
Streets are ballroom smooth with curbs of foam
Cars wait politely at every juncture
Welcome to where electric bikes roam!

It’s where perennial tailwinds blow
and helmets won’t flatten your hairdo

Ballard = the Seattle neighborhood where our e-bike shop is still located

Phrases swift, glib, bouncy & cheap
cascade in bombastic profusion
pile up in bewildering heap
fueling cacophonous confusion

While the lucid sentence garroted
(amidst clamoring derision)
the cliché-like phrase pours parroted
heard as expression elysian

So what if of meaning we seem fogbound
as long as we impress with how we sound?

When twenty with insolent surety
he did pace on impunity’s floor
When forty untouched by maturity
while at eighty he awes: Teach me more!

Though his recall dimming
rigidity gels primmer
slender skills keep slimming
Earthly prospects grow grimmer

His self-portrait still rankles
clownish in aging’s rust
Slogging up to his ankles
in Life’s circus sawdust

While he squanders social security
in self-obfuscating obscurity

Rushing is so much fresh fun
as ‘my sweet life’ has just started
must have a great rat race run
for which I’ll fight lionhearted!

Life ought not ask anything from me
exect to enjoy indulging!
Just love staying busy, can’t you see
cupboards, debt & midriff bulging

Out of breath, speech smattered
need to somehow find more time!
Heart & mind all scattered
got no time to waste on rhyme!

+)
-smatter = to speak with superficial knowledge or understanding
